Define the norm you will violate:
I will be dressing up as a woman with a short skirt and a sign saying if I’m asking for it.
Describe briefly how this norm acts as a mechanism of social control.
For a guy, I will be dressing up as a women to break the norm that men don’t dress up as a women and also having a sign
Describe what you will do to violate the norm.
Dressing up as a women, to show that a guy can dress up as a girl and that my sign is saying “ Not asking for it” because of the fact that even though I’m wearing a dress, doesn’t mean I want some other person looking at me and allowing themselves to do whatever they want.
Describe the range of possible reactions others will have to the violation of this norm.
Laughter and strange looks that are going to happen, many people are going to be surprise about the way I’m going to take it but it’s for a serious cause and I want to show my full support.
What do you predict the major reaction to be?
I do believe that a lot of people are going to be making fun of me and whistling at me, because they’ll believe it’s just a joke.
Where do you plan on the norm violation taking place? Be specific as possible.
Going to school and walking around every period as if it’s just a normal day, possible walking around more and showing people who I am and what I’m supporting. Also trying to go play basketball after school at my elementary school, so it’s going to be a very strange day.
How many and what type of people do you expect to encounter?
I expect to encounter 50 people or more, and who ever goes to school and play basketball
Describe your own and others’ reactions before, during, and after each violation.
Before: I feel nervous and afraid of what people might say, and not believing me. During: Feel comfortable but still nervous, I expect people to laugh at me a lot. After: I’ll feel accomplished from what I’ve achieved and I say that we can just laugh at.
How did the reactions compare to what you had anticipated?
I expected worse to what I went through, i thought I would be laughed at but I was just stared and talked about. I could hear people saying is he wearing a skirt? Why is he doing that?
Why does the norm you choose to violate exist? What would happen if it didn’t exist? Would the results be good or bad? The norms I break is that men are able to wear clothes that are of different sex comfortable without making fun of and that people can give the reason that she’s asking for it?
Did your experience stimulate any other questions? How would you test those question?
Why does dressing up differently matter so much? Why are people uncomfortable with seeing other people dress differently?
Look up the “spotlight effect” (not the kind that relates to photography or photoshop). Define it (in your own words) and describe how it relates to your experience. you’re center of attention, that everyone is watching you and talking about you. I could feel and see everyone seeing me and talking about me. Which if you do something out of the norm, people no matter what will talk about you.
What did this exercise teach you about the social justice activism as a method for changing the world? Not a lot of people can do things to change the world, because many people are scared to be outside of the bubble that we live in. That everything is “perfect”, this helped me motivate myself to do more things like things and don’t think what people say or do because this is helping me and the topic I’m talking about.
Some people regularly choose to break social norms and act as social justice activists. Name 2-3 famous people who you consider to be social justice activists. Why do you think some people choose to be social justice activists?
Mahatma Gandhi- Fought for India’s independence with a hunger strike to be able to bring back peace between India’s country.
Cesar Chavez- Fought for Union right to be able to get paid better and better hours, and striked with a hunger strike.
