In Chicago, there are many steps being taken to resolve feminist issues such as rape and sexual assault. Since Chicago is such a populated city, there are many people who want to support organizations such as Chicago NOW (National Organization for Women). This organization, specifically has a goal “to make a difference in the lives of the women in our city by dedicating ourselves to several key projects each year, and through community outreach and political activities,” which shows the dedication that they have to make a difference for feminists locally. This continues to prove that the creation of multiple feminist organizations is able to inspire other feminists to create their own. However, there are still a few issues that should be acknowledged--specifically about Chicago’s approach to rape/sexual assault crimes. According to a CBS article, it states that “..ultimately, much of the public at large, advocates argue, need to change the way they perceive sexual assault,” but organizations such as the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation is able to make a difference. They believe that “actions that can help dispel harmful rape myths include: interrupting sexist, misogynistic, racist or homophobic jokes and refusing to buy products that ‘promote the notion that women should or do get sexual pleasure from being dominated.’” This helps encourage people to change their behavior, in hopes of making a difference in rape culture and its statistics.
Students can partner with certain organizations that help support feminist issues. There are many local organizations that help women, including the Chicago NOW chapter, and Everyday Feminism provides the ability for feminists to promote gender equality online. For example, they can “..book an Everyday Feminism writer for a speaking engagement, cross-post (their) article, and write for the online magazine,” which gives people the opportunity to learn more about feminism stimulate the feminist movement. If more feminists became involved locally, they would be able to make a difference in their community. This is important because in order to successfully promote the feminist movement, you must begin with smaller actions before you take on the bigger responsibilities-- and being involved in the feminist movement locally, will eventually contribute to success globally.
