English laws were rewritten to exact a penalty of death upon a man who raped an unmarried or married women. [Even though] it was rarely enforced, it was one of the first laws it was making rape against all women a crime” in the western world (Poskin, 2008). But with slavery on the rise between the 15th and 19th century “During slavery, black women were often at the mercy of white men since the rape of slaves was both common and legal, and many slaveowners raped their own slaves to produce more slaves”(Caroline Heldman and Baillie Brown, 2014).
