Rape and sexual assault has been one of the most horrific crimes done in our society, and it is awfully unfair to find that survivors of these crimes are not given the awareness they need in being heard but often get horrible assumptions and stereotypical sarcasm. Rape was first defined as a sexual crime in the 12th century. In the laws of Britain, the expression of rape originally referred to “the nonsexual crime of violent theft;” however, the 12th century Codex of Gratian defined the difference between abduction and rape, which made the clear meaning that rape is crime of forced sexual intercourse. In the late 1600s, British Judge Lord Matthew Hale said that rape was “an accusation easily to be made and hard to be proved and harder to be defended by the party accused, though never so innocent (Freedman, 2013).” This demonstrates that since the 15th century, rape was not taken seriously as a crime and it can be related to these modern times in which part of society doesn’t have the audacity to support victims and raise awareness.
It was since the early 1990s, the idea to fight against sexual assault thorough researching society’s views and stereotypical ideas, which highlights the idea that as the rape crime accumulates over time, the establishment of women’s rights is a struggle that feminist activists, along greater society, try to achieve in fight against for women’s rights. According to the Department of Justice, the low estimate of the number of women raped every year is 300,000. Due to the CDC, the high estimate of the number of women raped is 1.3 million (Chemaly, 2014). To most of society, it’s a woman's physical appearance that makes it possible for them to be victims of any sexual or physical abuse, erasing blame from the predator/aggressor. When a woman says no, it means no and it is never a woman’s fault to be a victim of rape. There is no place for a rapist in our society.
